Why an Ultrasound Is the Next Step
A positive pregnancy test tells you that hCG is present in your body. What it cannot tell you is how far along you are, where the pregnancy is located, or whether it is still developing.
An ultrasound provides those details, and they are important for your health and for understanding the full picture before making any decisions.
Limited OB ultrasounds at Carlisle Area Family Life Center are free and confidential. Because ultrasounds are a medical service, they are available by appointment following a positive pregnancy test.
What a Limited OB Ultrasound Can Show
Gestational age and estimated due date
Knowing how far along you are helps you understand your options. If you are considering abortion, gestational age is especially significant because the abortion pill is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Location of the pregnancy
In some cases, a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. This is called an ectopic pregnancy, and it can become life-threatening if not identified and treated promptly. Symptoms are not always noticeable until complications arise, which is why confirming location matters.
Whether the pregnancy is progressing
An ultrasound can also detect a miscarriage, which occurs in as many as 26% of known pregnancies. If a miscarriage has already taken place, you may need additional medical care.
A Note on STI Testing
If you are pregnant, getting tested for sexually transmitted infections is an important step in protecting your health and your baby’s health.
We can refer you to a federally qualified health center for confidential STI testing. Ask our staff about this referral during your appointment.

Results will be reviewed with you, and if additional medical care or referrals are needed, we will help connect you with local providers. This service helps you gather information about your pregnancy and health; please note that we do not provide or refer for abortions.
